Started in Savannah by Congregation Mickve Israel in 2008, the Backpack Buddy Program has grown into a county-wide, multi-denominational effort uniting over 20 Jewish, Lutheran, Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian and other congregations to provide healthy meals and snacks on the weekend for children at-risk for hunger. These Partnerships are now serving almost 700 students. And, because hunger is no longer just an inner city problem, congregations like Silk Hope Baptist, the Church at Godley Station, Gateway Methodist, West Chatham Baptist, Christ Presbyterian, Savannah Christian, The Chapel (Rincon) and now, Alpha United Methodist, are working to bring this program to our suburban Chatham and Effingham schools.
Alpha is proud to serve over 30 needy children at Bloomingdale Elementary school, providing meal, snacks and beverages for their weekends. For more information about how you can donate or help pack backpacks, contact the church office at (912) 748-4025
